Philip qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1986 and continued at the RVC as Medicine Houseman. He worked as a locum and subsequently for the PDSA before joining private practice. In 1989-90 Philip took a year out of practice to successfully complete a one-year full-time MBA at Cranfield University. Philip was a Council member of the British Veterinary Hospital Association (BVHA) from 1992-98 and was President in 1996-7, a Council member of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) in 1996-1997 as the representative for BVHA and in 2005-2006 for the Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS). Philip was also a Council member of SPVS from 1995-2010 and was Honorary Secretary from 1998-2001 and President in 2005-2006. He has also been an RCVS Hospital Inspector and an SPVS representative to the Practice Standards Group and helped revise the (2010) Practice Standards.
