A riverside town in East London, Barking sits around 9 miles east of Charing Cross and offers excellent transport links across London and beyond.
We're looking for a Veterinary Surgeon to join our well-established Barking practice on a full-time basis. If you enjoy the variety of first-opinion practice, like getting to know your clients and their pets, and want the support of a nearby 24-hour hospital when you need it, this could be your next move.
About your new role!
Our Barking practice has supported the local community for many years, providing a wide range of diagnostic, medical and surgical care.
We're looking for a vet who is confident working in a busy GP environment, enjoys building strong relationships with clients and is happy to get stuck into a varied caseload.
You'll be joining a collaborative team who communicate openly and support one another through the busy days as well as the quieter ones.
The practice is well equipped to support a varied first-opinion caseload, with digital X-ray and dental X-ray available to help you investigate and treat your patients.
And when you need additional support, you're never far from it. Wanstead Veterinary Hospital provides advanced clinical support, internal referrals, OOH care and hospitalisation, giving you the reassurance of a 24-hour hospital network while your normal working week remains based at Barking.
What are we looking for?
We're looking for a vet who can confidently provide a full GP service and enjoys the variety that first-opinion practice brings.
A particular interest in surgery and dentistry would be a bonus, as these are areas where the practice has a strong caseload and the facilities to support you, including dental X-ray.
This role would suit an experienced GP vet who is comfortable managing a varied caseload and is looking for a practice where they can build strong client relationships and continue developing their clinical skills.
Due to the nature of the role, this position is not suitable for a new graduate.
Whether you're looking for your next experienced GP role or somewhere you can develop your existing interests, you'll have access to support from our experienced clinical and regional teams.
As a Veterinary Surgeon, some of your duties will include:
- Carry out consultations, thoroughly examining all pets presented and making management and treatment recommendations based on best practice, evidence and GVG protocols.
- Perform GP surgery within your personal competence and clinical limitations.
- Maintain, prescribe and dispense medications in accordance with current medicines legislation and RCVS guidance.
- Record accurate and thorough clinical notes and ensure patient histories are comprehensive and useful to colleagues.
- Refer cases in a timely manner when further investigation or treatment is required, with access to Wanstead Veterinary Hospital for internal referral.
- Build strong and trusting relationships with clients and their pets.
- Help maintain a respectful, supportive and collaborative team environment.
This is a full-time role averaging 40 hours per week, with the rota generally consisting of:
1:3 or 1:4 branch Saturday rotation
1:8 Sunday rotation at Wanstead Veterinary Hospital
There is a last-resort-only on-call requirement for this role, which is very rarely used. We're very happy to discuss this in more detail with you during the recruitment process.
Approximately 6 of the rota'd Saturday shifts per year will include an additional 6pm–9:30pm Twilight shift at Wanstead Veterinary Hospital, helping to support the night handover. This is included within your average contracted weekly hours.
You will also be required to cover 2 bank holidays per year.
Barking has excellent transport links, making it an easy commute from across East London and beyond.
The practice is just a short walk from Barking station, with access to National Rail, London Overground and the Underground, making connections across London straightforward.
And when you do need the additional support of Wanstead Veterinary Hospital, it's all part of the same wider Goddard team.
Now let's delve into the nitty gritty...
Our veterinary salary band is £55,000 to £72,000 FTE, depending on prior experience and allowing room for professional growth within the role.
A little snippet of the benefits you'll receive as a Goddard vet:
